Go Natural and Innovative on Your Sunscreen and Let Your Skin Thank You…

Consumers today are experiencing major perspective shifts when it comes to a choice of various products. Beauty choices are not left behind. Gone are the days when sunscreens were perceived as just a lotion, spray, gel or foam which people applied on their skin to save themselves from suntan and UV rays.

People who believe in conscious beauty, contemplate several factors while picking up a sunscreen. They may opt for ‘natural’ sunscreens that do not contain chemicals like oxybenzone – which can cause allergies and affect hormones. Sunscreens also contain a chemical called octinoxate. This chemical, along with oxygenzone, causes considerable damage to marine life. Studies reveal that around 14,000 tons of sunscreen is washed into oceans each year. This destroys the coral reef and affects the endocrine system of the fish. So, an increasing number of people are opting for biodegradable sunscreens, which use non-toxic ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium oxide. The FDA approves of two ingredients and considers them to be safe and effective.

Packaging sunscreens in plastic bottles is another example of a non-biodegradable component. Apart from using natural ingredients, manufacturers today are offering packaging ranging from compostable sticks, reusable jars, tins; thereby adding the tinge of sustainability to their brand value.

Going for cruelty-free sunscreen is another way of showing consideration towards the environment. Such sunscreens are not tested on animals.

There is a difference in the way in which natural and synthetic sunscreens are absorbed in the body. Typically, natural sunscreens have a thicker texture and consistency as compared to synthetic sunscreens. While synthetic sunscreens disappear into the skin without a trace, a natural sunscreen leaves a slightly opaque film. It may take a bit longer to rub it in well. This is because the active ingredients – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide do not get fully absorbed into the skin. They remain on the top and block the sun for you. However, nowadays sunscreens contain these two ingredients in micronized form, which allows them to blend evenly and effectively into the skin.

We would suggest you consider these ‘conscious’ sunscreen brands, which promote the idea of green living, being environmentally safe and free of toxic products too.
